Winter Scavenger Hunt

Snowy creek in Rocky Mountains

This winter scavenger hunt is a good nature activity to relive cabin fever and get outdoors into fresh air.

It is nice to walk around a backyard or neighborhood and search for signs of animals and plants.

You can focus on one or two items to hunt for or many more. This game can be used with almost any number of players.

As always, don't limit this list to kids. These actually are some good nature journal prompts for older children and adults.

Can you find...

  • seven different colors?
  • something that is red?
  • something that is brown?
  • something that is very old?

  • a pine cone?
  • a track? Who do you think made it?
  • a hole dug by an animal? Why do you think it dug the hole?
  • a tunnel in the snow?

  • a snowflake?
  • an icicle?

  • brown leaves still hanging from a tree? What kind of tree do you think it is?
  • a gall on at tree or plants? (Hint look at Oaks and Goldrenrods)
  • signs of insects? rolled leaves, galls, leaf mines?
  • a hole in a tree where an animal might shelter from bad weather?
  • five different kinds of leaves? (Don't forget evergreens)
  • five different seeds? or more?
  • five different birds?
  • three tree buds waiting for spring?
  • holes in trees? Who made them woodpeckers, insects, someone else?
