Choosing a Field Bag for Nature Study

Field Bags for Nature Study

The field bags that work the best for me. My beloved Eddie Bauer bag is on the right.

I have had more field bags than I can count. They have ranged in size from a waist pouch to backpacks. The one model that has worked the absolute best for me has been a field bag from Eddie Bauer.

This Eddie Bauer gem has a large central compartment roomy enough for my compact binoculars and a compact point-and-shoot digital camera. It has a zippered compartment in the flap for keys. A pocket in the back for pocket-size field guides, a front compartment with space for pens and pencils. It fits all the equipment I use. It is always packed and always ready to go. Even to the backyard.

Of course, I have never have found the same bag again. But Pajaro makes a similar field bag. I have a large Pajaro bag, "The Grande", to hold my full-size binoculars and larger digital zoom camera. It is the bag of choice for trips to distinct places.

I use a backpack for hiking. It holds more and is better for keeping your balance when hiking difficult trails.

It might take awhile to find that special bag. But, take comfort in knowing many naturalists have the same problem.
