Fall Nature Activities

Migrating Redwing Blackbirds

Migrating Redwing Blackbirds

Here you'll find plenty of fall nature activities to be used as journal prompts.

They are suitable to do with children of all ages.

Don't think these ideas are just for kids.

Imagine how you would write, draw or photograph some of these ideas and you'll probably want to go outside right away.

The Journal Prompts

1. Record the changes in the temperature, length of days, and the weather.

2. Check for dew on the grass each morning? Check for the first frosts.

3. Collect the seeds and berries of plants. What seeds and nuts are animals storing?

4. Are some animals noticeably fatter?

5. Fall is a good time to find and draw or photograph mushrooms.

6. Listen for the migration calls of geese and squirrels chattering.

7. Watch for fall migration and hibernation activity.

8. What does autumn smell like? I love the smell of burning wood as people starting using their fireplaces again.

9. Look for insect eggs and cocoons on plants and beneath logs and rocks.

10. Notice how plants, animals and people prepare for winter.
