Equipment for the Naturalist

Equipment for nature study

Equipment for nature study is easily obtained.
You can go outside with just your five senses (sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing) and observe.
But most naturalists have a few simple tools that enhance the nature watching experience.
It is the optics (binoculars and microscopes) that cost the most. But you can find optics ofgood quality at reasonable prices.

The Sunflower Naturalist Store has the tools discussed in this section.

What I have found most useful is listed in order of importance.

  1. nature journal
  2. binoculars
  3. hand lens
  4. field guides
  5. camera
  6. microscope
  7. and a field bag to put in all in.

There really isn't much more you can add to this.

I do have some weather measuring tools in my backyard habitat. I have a combination rain gauge and outdoor thermometer, but not much else.

I use the Internet for moon phases, and wind speeds. One day I would like a weather station that records all this outside in my backyard habitat.

If you frequent streams and wet environments you may need nets and containers.
