The Best of Backyard Habitat is Now on DVD
The Best of Backyard Habitat is now on dvd. This show ran for one season (2006-2007) on the Animal Planet channel.
If you missed this informative series, here is the chance to see it. The dvd does not contain all the episodes of the series, but twelve which highlight a wide range of places and techniques.
The episodes focus on attracting one or two species. The people create ponds, build nesting platforms and plant native plants. In many of the episodes, the homeowners wanted to create a place where their children could discover and respect the natural world.
Each of the twelve episodes finds hosts David Mizejewski and Molly Pesce helping homeowners create mini-preserves. The spaces are all across the United States from New York City to Southern California.
Here is a list of the episodes on the dvd and some of what they cover.
Episode 1 - City Birds (Harlem, New York City) - bird feeding, owl box
Episode 2 - Possums and Raccoons (Washington, D.C. ) - how to live in harmony with possums and raccoons
Episode 3 - Band-tailed Pigeon and Mountain Beaver (Washington state) -creating a naturalistic pond
Episode 4 - Tree Frogs - (Orlando, Florida) - tadpoles, pond muck, andwater gardens, invasive species

Episode 11 - The Osprey ( Florida) - nesting platform, duck nests and wetland plants

As you can see the idea of attracting animals to your garden or property extend beyond birds and butterflies. I watched the show when it was on television and have bought and watched the dvd. I thoroughly enjoyed both. I highly recommend The Best of Backyard Habitat.
